Visa & Travel

Passports, visas, flights and what to expect at the border.

Passport

You must hold a valid Indian passport with at least 18 months validity beyond your planned return date. Apply for your passport as early as possible โ€” ideally as soon as you are selected, as processing can take 4โ€“8 weeks.

๐Ÿ“‹ Apply online at passportindia.gov.in. You will need to visit your nearest Passport Seva Kendra for document verification.

Student Visa

Most destination countries require a student or exchange visitor visa. The host Rotary district will provide you with an official invitation letter and programme documentation to support your visa application. Visa requirements vary by country โ€” your RYE Chair will guide you through the specific process for your destination.

Start your visa application at least 3 months before departure.
Some embassies require documents translated into the local language โ€” Rotary will advise.
Visa fees vary by country and are the student's responsibility.
Keep copies of all visa correspondence and approval documents.

Flights

Students are responsible for booking and paying for their own return flights. The nearest international airports to Jamshedpur are Kolkata (CCU) and Ranchi (IXR). Book flights only after your visa is confirmed.

โš ๏ธ Do not book flights until your visa is approved and your host family placement is confirmed by the host district.

At the Border

Carry your Rotary acceptance letter, host family details, programme documentation and return flight ticket in your hand luggage. Be prepared to explain the purpose of your visit to immigration officers. Your RYE Chair will brief you fully at the pre-departure orientation.
