What to expect from school life in Jamshedpur.

School Placement

Inbound students are placed in one of Jamshedpur's English-medium schools, selected in consultation with your host family and the RYE committee. Schools are informed of your arrival in advance and will have a buddy student assigned to help you settle in.

The School Day

School hours are typically 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday to Saturday.

Core subjects are taught in English. You may also attend Hindi language classes.

Class sizes are larger than in most Western countries — typically 35–50 students.

Most schools require a uniform. Your host family will help you obtain this.

Co-curricular activities — sports, music, debate, NCC — are an important part of school life and you are encouraged to participate.

Academic Expectations

You are not expected to sit formal exams or receive grades that count towards your home country's academic record. However, you are expected to attend regularly, participate actively and respect the school's rules and staff.

📚 Bring a letter from your home school confirming your academic level and any subjects you are currently studying. This helps with your placement.

Public Holidays & School Breaks

India has a rich calendar of national and regional holidays. Schools observe all national holidays and many regional festivals. Your school calendar will be shared with you on arrival. Use holiday periods to explore the region with your host family.
